Beckenham Constituency Labour Party:
Alan and Micheline were invited by Susan Harris to speak about their book to the Beckenham Constituency Labour Party recently – their debut presentation together!
They spoke for a few minutes and then asked everyone to speak for one minute each answering the question:
“What event or experience do you remember in your personal life which made you decide to become an activist for social change?”
Despite the ‘strangeness’ of being asked to do this, with our ‘little pig’ timer peeping away after each minute, everyone said something different and powerful.
Many people identified themselves as ‘socialists’ and, in the discussion afterwards, there was an agreement that in the last few years, the word had become ‘dirty’ and hard to admit to, but that it was something they were actually deeply proud about, and they were now more determined to ‘come out’ with confidence.
Another comment was that our intervention had helped the group, nearly half of whom were new members, to feel they knew each other a bit – the group felt safer. We were very pleased with how it went and hope it is the first of many.
