Capitalism – What’s the harm?

Capitalism is widely promoted as the best economic system so far. It is credited with bringing about a global rise in the standard of living for millions of people.

This may be true, although the harm it simultaneously inflicts on people is hidden, but a system which requires perpetual growth and growing inequality cannot continue forever. It will inevitably destroy all the benefits it has created and threaten the natural world upon which we depend. We are already seeing this begin to happen. Follow the links below to see the evidence.

Our biggest barrier to progress we suggest, is ourselves. Through growing up under the capitalist system we have inevitably been harmed. We are full of fears and confusions. We behave in ways which are not useful because of old and rigid habits. We often sabotage our own dreams without meaning to. We are numb to our own pain and disconnected from others. Most importantly we are unaware of our own power to bring about change.

Luckily, our humanity still burns brightly just beneath the surface. The damage that the system inflicts can be healed, if not completely, at least enough to allow us to help bring about a better world for our children. We can do this – in fact we already are. Go to ‘Signs of Hope’ to be inspired.

Capitalism is the dominating world economic system and it causes much more damage to people and the natural world than is commonly recognised through, for example:

  • war

  • the effects of poverty

  • industrial injuries and deaths

  • pollution

  • extinction of species and global warming

This damage also leaves an emotional legacy of hurt e.g. grief, fear, confusion and internalised violence.

On this page we will be adding links to a vast array of evidence which has existed for many years that documents the harmful impact of capitalism on humans and on human societies.
